A fiber optic backbone was installed along Metra’s right-of-way on the Rock Island Main, Rock Island Beverly, and SouthWest Service Lines. The fiber optic backbone consists of two fiber optic lines along with a fiber reinforced duct, with most cables and ducts installed underground. This installation enables Metra to minimize usage of 3rd-party communication systems while building redundancy in its communication system.
